A well designed foundation for a machine must meet the general requirements for all foundations.1) A great rigidity of the machine foundation is important, as a small deflection of a few thousandths of an inch may decrease the hearing capacity especially when several bearing supports are required. In this case the concrete slabs may warp and it must be considered. Such warping may occur when the top surface of the slab dries out, but the lower surface is moist. The best measure against warping is massive block-type construction.
2) The mass of the foundation must be adequate to absorb vibration and to prevent the resonance between the machine and the soil foundation system.
3) Sometimes it is required to increase the foundation weight In proportion to the power of the engines. (For each brake horsepower of multicylinder engines the necessary minimum (in pounds) of weight of the foundation should be provided for gas engines, diesel engines and steam engines).
